Founded in 2018, Southern Subs Jiu-Jitsu is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy in Steenberg, Cape Town, proudly affiliated to GFTeam International. Our members travel in from Tokai, Retreat, Lakeside, Kirstenhof, Westlake, Bergvliet, Heathfield, Meadowridge, Constantia and Muizenberg — most are on the mats within ten minutes of leaving home. We train hard, look after each other, and live by one rule on and off the mats: never give up.

Our culture is beginner-friendly and fundamentals-based, with a competition team that competes regularly. Whether you're a hobbyist looking to train and grow or a competitor chasing medals, you'll fit right in.

Traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the kimono. Grips, technique, and strategy — chess played at full resistance.

2nd Degree Brown Belt · under Gary Joshua (1st Degree Black Belt)

Coach Grant has been training since 2010 across multiple martial arts disciplines — boxing, Muay Thai, and MMA. Jiu-jitsu is his main focus, and he brings that wealth of knowledge to his students every time he steps on the mats.

His coaching is built on the same culture that defines Southern Subs: beginner-friendly, fundamentals-based, and driven by one rule — never give up.

Southern Subs has podiumed at every major competition in South Africa — ADCC, AJP, Alpha Grappling, Grappling Industries, and plenty of smaller events besides. Whether you want to compete or just train like a competitor, you'll be pushed and supported every step of the way.

Competing is never compulsory — but if you want to step onto the mats at a tournament, our team will get you ready and be in your corner when you do.
